Generally, during our journey in Myanmar, we met many very honest and extremely friendly people. Most of them have to survive with a very small income (as little as 10 USD per month and a few kilos of rice). Although the country is opening up (having USD is no longer illegal for locals), you can still feel the military regime strongly. For example, it is virtually impossible to talk to anyone about politics (unless in the middle of nowhere) because people are scared about denunciation which inevitably means they will go to prison. Another thing, which astonished me personally, was the status of women in this country. All heavy work (e.g. roadworks) is done by women. If the driver carried one of our bags, it was Christian’s. When we told our trekking guide that this is very different at home his answer was: ”Yes, but you have machines to do the hard work – so it is not as hard anymore”.
