After a gruesome night due to a Buddhist monk reading the holy book to achieve merit for his future life, transferred through loud speakers at maximum volume, we left for Kyaiktiyo (also known as Golden Rock), the second most holy place. To catch the vibe of this place we ascended the hill the same way as the pilgrims do – first on the back of a truck (“How many pilgrims fit on a Burmese truck? At least one more!”) and then by foot. In fact, I think the Burmese government tried to save money by building the road the shortest possible distance – straight up the hill. The worst: half way up we were huffing and puffing and overtaken by four men carrying two slightly overweight tourists on chairs fixed on two bamboo trunks. And they were not even out of breath! Training is definitely necessary… Nevertheless, the climb was worth it and the rock (held in place by only one hair of Buddha) extremely impressive.
